THE EXHIBITION

The exhibition originates from an in-depth research project carried out by the curators across various private and public archives, such as the RAI archive, where memories, documents, and testimonies from tailoring houses and jewellers were collected. THE GENTLEMAN is produced by the Cultural Association STILE E STORIA, in collaboration with several institutional bodies, including the Municipality of Milan, Palazzo Morando, the National Chamber of Italian Fashion, and the University of Milan.

MALE JEWERLY

The jewel as an object always lends itself to multiple levels of interpretation. Male jewelry, in particular, often serves a practical function: buttons, buckles, cufflinks, tie pins were, and still are, worn with the purpose of fastening or securing garments, shirts, and ties; signet rings were historically used to imprint the owner's emblem or initial in sealing wax on letters or official documents, and today they have become a fashionable accessory; cigarette holders and cases allowed smokers to display elegant and precious objects.

The exhibition “THE GENTLEMAN – Style and Male Jewelry” presents a series of objects that show the evolution of style and taste through the centuries, but they are also representative of historical and social events.

Jewelry is also a powerful means of communication, and male jewelry often becomes a tool to demonstrate belonging to a family, social group, political movement, or military organization. Each object has been chosen not only for its aesthetic value but also for its narrative capacity.
