MALE JEWERLY

The jewel as an object always lends itself to multiple levels of interpretation. Male jewelry, in particular, often serves a practical function: buttons, buckles, cufflinks, tie pins were, and still are, worn with the purpose of fastening or securing garments, shirts, and ties; signet rings were historically used to imprint the owner's emblem or initial in sealing wax on letters or official documents, and today they have become a fashionable accessory; cigarette holders and cases allowed smokers to display elegant and precious objects.

The exhibition “THE GENTLEMAN – Style and Male Jewelry” presents a series of objects that show the evolution of style and taste through the centuries, but they are also representative of historical and social events.

Jewelry is also a powerful means of communication, and male jewelry often becomes a tool to demonstrate belonging to a family, social group, political movement, or military organization. Each object has been chosen not only for its aesthetic value but also for its narrative capacity.

The exhibition “THE GENTLEMAN – Style and Male Jewellery” is conceived as an exhibition and narrative journey aimed at exploring and enhancing the evolution of male aesthetics from the 18th century to the present day. The investigation unfolds both chronologically and thematically, offering a transversal reading of the transformations in taste, social role, and the symbolic function of jewellery in shaping male identity, while also considering its practical aspects.
